Oloolokitoshi Primary School visit, Kajiado County

Conversations about menstruation have made a shift today; this was evidently seen at Oloolokitoshi primary school in Kajiado county when we visited in April.

The young girls we engaged were excited to be part of a conversation that the world has continuously silenced and considered a taboo. It was noticeable that most of the young girls Grade 5 onwards had a rich knowledge about basic hygiene practices during menstruation and how to use the disposable menstrual pads.

The head teacher at Oloolokitoshi primary school liked the idea of having conversations about sustainable menstrual options siting that perhaps it’s most important to always start with the known to unknown.

We brought Grade 4 on board by explaining to them what the whole session was about  to enable them have a glimpse and relate to the topic of discussion.

Our Program Coordinator, Ziporah Barongo, had an interactive session about sustainable menstruation and sustainable menstrual products; menstrual cups and washable pads with the girls.

At Project Somesha, we distribute menstrual products after we are done with our sessions to contribute towards actualizing our mission of ensuring no girl misses school because of lack of menstrual products. 155 young girls benefitted during the distribution and grade 4 was lucky to get panties too.
